Grounding (AI)

Grounding is the practice of requiring every AI-generated statement to cite, and be verifiable against, a specific source in the underlying documents.

Also known as: citation grounding, grounded ai

In claims work, an ungrounded AI assertion is a liability. Grounding ties each statement to the exact span it came from and verifies the quote against the document. Anything that can't be verified is withheld and labeled rather than presented as fact, the difference between an assistant you can audit and a plausible-sounding guess.
